Tongari is a type family of seven weights and their seven italics. Tongari is a japanese word for “sharp-pointed”. Sharp-pointed, as the swords of the seven samurai in the Akira Kurosawa movie, in which a bunch of warriors defend a village from thieves.
Seven weights for seven samurai.
I started the design with a medium weight, with a lot of contrast and very sharp endings. But these features were a bit too intense for a text typeface intended for continuous reading at small size. So I calmed down the contrast and decided to keep them for a display version later.
I always do a lot of sketches to craft the shapes of the letters, the computer is a tool among others, and all tools act their part.
Once all the seven weights of the Tongari text font family have been created, along with their seven italics, I decided to go back to the initial spirit of my drawings and make a display version.
Tongari display typeface has a strong contrast, a higher x-height and even sharper endings. Some shapes also differs, like the g, with its sexy curves and its open tail. Thus the font is a good fit for magazine big titles or exhibition design.
If the type tester is not enough for your trials, you can contact me and I can provide a trial version with a limited glyphset (basic lowercase and basic capitals) and no OpenType features.
Please remember that this type foundry can continue providing new designs only if you buy fonts once in a while :)
