Jaakko (with two 'a' and two 'k') is a Finnish name. The typeface has been inspired by a book intended for Finnish lettering artists showing them how to paint commercial inscriptions. The characters look as if made with a flat brush or a marker and have a strong handwritten flavour. A lot of characters were missing from the samples so I drew them with my own marker, then correcting them with white as can be seen on the ampersand, before moving to digitizing phase.
A big part of the work was to get an even texture of text, by balancing the angles of each letter so that they overall give an impression of homogeneity. Jaakko is shown at its best in large size, when we can see the details of imperfect junctions of its shapes, but I wanted to make it work also a a text typeface set at a 9 points height.
If the type tester is not enough for your trials, you can contact me and I can provide a trial version with a limited glyphset (basic lowercase and basic capitals) and no OpenType features.
Please remember that this type foundry can continue providing new designs only if you buy fonts once in a while :)
